Structure Situation Yields Big Hybrid Striped Bass Catch

Last weekend, a decent trip turned great when I was able to take a casting position and catch 5 big hybrid striped bass - more than 50 pounds of fish from a single structure situation. The first attempt produced 2 of the fish, while the second visit to the location yielded 3 more fish several hours later. Just as we are told to keep checking back on the shallows throughout the day, you should also visit known productive structure situations more than once, because you never know just when or for how long a movement will occur, and there can be 2 or 3 in any given day.

Doug Stange on Depth and Speed Control

An excerpt from "The Walleye Softbait Scene" by Jim Edlund for In-Fisherman:

Solid advice comes from In-Fisherman Editor In Chief Doug Stange, who’s been on the cutting edge of the shift from natural to synthetic baits since the mid-1970s. “I always go back to Buck Perry’s instruction and look at soft plastics the same way I do crankbaits,” he says. “Concentrate on depth control first, followed by speed control and how you’re working a lure. Then lure vibration and cadence play a role. Only after you get these factors in order do color, scent, and taste come into play. It’s all part of the experiment we need to conduct every time we get on the water, trying to put together the perfect package that catches fish.”

Successful Fishing Is Not A Difficult Thing

[Education Editor] Buck Perry begins each day on the water by checking various features (structure, breaks, break lines) for signs of fish life. A combination of trolling and casting is used in order to determine (as quickly as possible) whether the fish have moved shallow and are actively feeding, or are deeper and possibly in a neutral or negative state. Although fishermen cannot control the "moods" of fish, each angler can certainly control the manner in which he goes about searching for them. We must go about our fishing in such a way that we can expect to get them all the time. We must use features in the body of water (structure, breaks, breaklines) as our only guide as to where the fish might be. In actuality, it doesn't require complicated "tools" (equipment) in order to become a top-notch fisherman. Successful fishing is not a difficult thing.
