"We wouldn't fish in the summertime, because the theory of all the older fishermen was, you can't catch any bass in the summertime because it's too hot; they won't bite. I'd heard of this fella' called Buck Perry. He was catching the heck out of them in the summertime, so I made it my business to look him up.
I was hanging around at his place at night...and he was such a genuine man. One day, he said, "Would you like to come to work for me?" I said, "Could we start in the morning?"
I was fortunate enough to spend one year with that genius. I did everything. Stamped out the Spoonplugs, buffed 'em, cleaned 'em, I didn't do the paint - Ms. Jenny did that in the little old spray booth. I ringed 'em, and hooked 'em, and packed. Buck and I would go fishing, a couple times a month, and he taught me so much about fishing, about deep structure fishing. I was so fortunate to be able to spend that time with him."
