Bill Wilhite

Thanks for the report. You mentioned jerk baits and shallow cranks but never described your cold water "go to". Unless you can give us a little help here, I will assume that it was either a jig and trailer or hair jig. How close was I?

Big Indiana Bass

Yep Bill, "sissy" jig.

I like it. I struggle with the scale being the same for good fishing conditions and bad fishing conditions. You have to be dialed in perfectly and on some really good spots to catch the same rate of fish per hour on a "high pressure, cold and muddy water" kind of day vs a "low pressure, overcast and slight chop on the water" kind of day.

For me, half the catch rate would be a success. :-)

Guess you should fish Champlain in May then. You can get a sucker bite going for smallies up north or largemouth down south!

Big Indiana Bass

That's the idea Jody - just too bad that Champlain is so far away :) If I was going to take a fishing vacation though, that kind of experience/timing is what I'd be planning around to try and maximize my catch rate.

Asshat

Ziggy Stardust philosophy as it relates to fishing - good one Brian.
wonder what David Byrne would have to say about .. de-barbing hooks for example.

"fishing on my terms". I like the sound of that.

BTW, either 'medium' or 'large' will do in the jersey, suppose I should get some boat graphics made?
Maybe some custom carpet graphics to replace the cigar burn & dog poop motif I'm rocking currently.

There's only so many days on the water in a lifetime ... and the clock's ticking.

Nice job, Brian. Fishing so YOU have the best chance of a good time makes sense, and that's catching fish and being with friends.

I like to think sucker shot every time. I think even when guys get really good results they have found something that has made it sucker shottish to THEM.

Learning something really important can trump almost any numbers or size, I know it will lead to more numbers and size in the future.

Hell of a sport and one day there won't be time for it, so enjoy yourself!

Nice article. I fish with Ned Kehde here in NE Kansas. I found that when using this kind of gage it is easier to figure out what bait is working and what colors work best. And then we keep a record of it and know from year to year what seemed to work best.

Ned is also a big fan of the "Frugal Angler" catch a lot of fish and not spend a lot of money.

Big Indiana Bass

Hey Travis - thanks for dropping by the site. I love Ned's articles, and as you mentioned, between the 101 fish and the frugal style, his fishing style has a very specific purpose. Always sounds like you guys have a good time out there, and you're right about all the data tracking - very useful!

Spoke with Rich Zaleski a while back, and he said to say 'Hi' to Ned for him - say 'Hi' for me, too. Gonna' try the 1/2 ZinzerZ trick on a jighead out here this year. Right now I throw the little hair jig a bunch, but think the plastic will be much better as the water warms.

Take Care -
