Very good article Brian I have always thought my expenditures were over the top, not because I had to have them just wanted them and can afford them. Now before long I will be retired. I know I spendable cash will be drastically cut back. I have enough tackle like everyone I fish with to start a small shop so then I will be glad I bought all of it. But I will still have that baitmonkey riding around on my shoulder.

Excellent!I remember those days and they will probably come to visit me once again. I did purchase a NEW rod/reel combo at the BSTS a couple of years ago (actually the rod was free with the reel purchase), but by and large, I just lay in wait for guys to tire of their "gotta have" equipment and buy it for pennies on the dollar when the bling, or wow factor subsides. I have helped all of my nephews with their tackle purchases and a few others that seeked advice on a certain combo or bait they were contemplating...

You didn't mention the Beetle Spin though!!

Big Indiana Bass

Terry - It was a toss-up between the Beetle Spin and the inlines. Either/or would serve a beginner well. I've actually won a couple early spring club tourneys on Beetle Spins in the larger 1/4-oz. size. Replaced the regular swivel with a Sampo. That smaller profile in cold water can be a killer at times when bass won't aggressively pursue larger profile "traditional" spinnerbaits. Again, it's all about "ego" vs. "tools", or is your 'image' more important than using the right 'tool' for the job to catch bass. Many have a hard time getting past that image thing ;~)
