GoPro professional anglers Brent Ehrler, Gerald Swindle and Brandon Palaniuk just updated their GoPro cameras and smart phone apps with the latest GoPro technology. The new app and matching firmware for the GoPro camera's will allow the anglers to instantly shoot a photo or video and upload through a number of channels including social media, email and messaging.
GoPro released the new software to the public earlier this week. The pros are all in agreement that the new update will allow them quicker access to their fans, family and friends. Palaniuk is especially excited about the ease of its use, "This will eliminate steps between the time I take the photo or video, and the time I get it to everyone. Before, I had to use a laptop to download the photo and video and then find a WiFi hotspot and upload it to the internet. With this I can shoot a cool photo and upload it immediately to my Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts for everyone to see."
Swindle believes it will allow his followers closer access to him. "Used correctly with social media this can actually become a new aged type of reality show. My fans can follow me almost to the minute and see what I am up to. This is really what bass fishing has needed. We'll be able to give fans a behind the scenes look at life as a professional angler."
Ehrler agrees with Palaniuk and Swindle that it will help him reach his fans, family and friends quicker and easier. Ehrler added it'll also be great way for him to keep up with his two year old son while he's on the road. "Kelley (Ehrler's wife) can take one of my cameras along and when something fun or new happens with Ollie she can send it to me right away. Except during tournament hours, I could be fishing on the Red River in Louisiana and be able to keep up with anything I might miss. It's not as good as being there, but it's better than seeing it tomorrow or next week. "
The new GoPro technology isn't just for the professional angler. Anyone with a GoPro and a smart phone can take advantage of this new technological advance by GoPro. Ehrler suggests, "Any angler wanting to share their experiences on and off the water with others can use this new update. GoPro's have always provided high quality footage and now with the ability to share it immediately it opens up a whole new level of sharing experiences; such as the fight of a huge bass or the first steps or words of a child. The Numbers and Stats Behind "Smaller" Bass
The "test" is over, and the numbers are in.
I mentioned about a month ago that I thought using finesse as the core component of my fishing approach might be 'the deal" for the way I like to fish. I also mentioned that I thought I could probably crush my 2300 fish year of 2011 if I wanted to by focusing in on this approach. I've now proven both theories to myself.
July isn't quite over yet, but I decided to track my catches again for a period to see what would happen. In just under a month, I made 16 trips to 3 different water bodies, fishing a total of 40.1 hours and catching 521 bass, for a catch rate of 13.0 bass per hour, or one every 4 min 37 sec. If I get the chance to get out yet this weekend, total bass numbers will go up a bit more. During this stretch I had 4 days of 50 bass or more, even during "cold front" days like recently in the pic, and I never fished for more than 5 hours on any given trip. Not a bad set of bassin' numbers for July.
The catch roughly broke down to 80% on finesse plastics, 10% on finesse cranks, and 10% on power baits. I need to keep working on bringing more finesse and more power options into the equation until I get a comfortable system down, but I'm not that far from being there. The largest fish during that stretch came on power baits (4-08, 4-06, 4-01), with a 4-00 on a finesse crank. Not surprising, but beyond those 4 fish, there were gobs of others in the 2 to 3.75 lb. range on the finesse plastics.
An interesting quote I came across during this study period regarding Shin Fukae's tournament approach was the following:
"As a tournament angler, Fukae says his daily goal is to catch 20 bass with the total weight of the five biggest weighing about 11 pounds."
The game has changed a bit since the article in which this appeared, but I was curious as to how those figures would stack up now days on Tour. After all, that's not even 2-1/4 pounds per bass, something this finesse approach is totally capable of producing from what I've seen. So I gathered the stats from the 2013 FLW Tour and ran the numbers.
This year, the last man in had 858 points, which works out to about 143 points per event, or 58th place. That falls almost smack in the middle of the above two figures, and probably lands you right around 12 pounds even. While some guys might not like the concept of just "fishing for a check", it certainly is a credible way to make a living in the industry. There is nothing wrong with consistently cashing checks and making the FLW Cup year after year with that approach. Not as much notoriety or media coverage as the top few guys get, but save your 'swing for the fences' approach for the Cup, where $500,000 is on the line and everybody is guaranteed a check just for qualifying. Simply put, you can't swing if you don't get invited to the ball park in the first place...Just a thought.
